Tuesday night featured one of the coolest designers, Karolyn Pho's sophomore runway endeavor (and fifth season) held at Pier 59 Studios.
For the Spring/Summer 2015, the main character in Pho's story is a vagabond. We follow her as she meanders through castles in the air, traipses between realities and crosses unknown borders. She is a nomad, a traveler, lost within her own self-perception. (Official Press Release)
Inspired by a personal experience, Pho was living out of a suitcase for the past nine months. She was bouncing from peoples couches, to her parents house and to sublets. "It was a feeling of being nomadic and not having a place to call home. Realizing how little things you need to be happy or to able to live on a day to day bases. So cutting out all these unnecessary elements in your life."
Pho's designing process includes music, movies and drawing from everything around her. "Everything around me is like a sponge. It's people I surround myself with, its the things that are going on in my life at the time, people that I meet, the new people coming into my life and how they affect me. All these emotions from that, really say a lot in my work."
This season she aims to further abstract the conditioned perception of femininity and masculinity. With pieces in a color palette inspired by the Med-Deco architecture of Miami, this collection was filled with fun and inspiring color combinations.
One of my favorite looks was the racerback mash tank, a-line burnt sienna skirt and twill camel bomber jacket. It's effortless yet still put together and chic. As well as the sporty numerical cropped mock turtle neck, that I immediately wanted in my closet.
With so many pieces that are sure to be a hit for Spring, Pho still remains one of the sweetest and talented designers out now. One to look forward to each season.
